We're back at it once again with a brand new playlist! Pretty much a standard, randomly compiled mix on this week's (though I should be saying month's) episode. I'm also joined again by my chum, TylerAbstract, while frequent background noise maker Jon makes a quick appearance too. This mix is courtesy of a short drive around town with my mp3 player set to shuffle, though I had to make a few editor choices to skim the length. The year 2013 is long gone, but before it becomes too late into 2014, let's have a look back at some of the more "traditional" songs and albums to drop over the past year. On this episode, I'm joined once again by my drunken buddies Tyler and Mike, who offer some colorful commentary to the show. While I was busy dodging bottle caps and yelling at Mike to shut up for two seconds, I streamed the show live over on our Mixlr page. Check it out next time I do a live show. Hear about the tech behind it, the stage show some of the artists put on, and some great samples. A love of video games is not required to appreciate this burgeoning genre, just an acceptance of creative new ways to create music.

Insufficient Funds is a weekly post in which we feature a free, or very close to it, piece of media that you can enjoy without overdrafting your bank account. So if you're low on funds, stay tuned to Cerebral Pop every Friday morning.

While my memories of Sonic the Hedgehog 2's soundtrack are fond, and I delighted at the Genesis-ization of the Lion King's music, it didn't occur to me that this style could be great outside games. After all, old games sound as they do because of hardware limitations. That was until a friend took me to a gig where DJ Scotch Egg rocked out with his Game Boy out until the venue literally pulled the plug on him.

Then I found 8bitpeoples. 8bitpeoples is a collective of chiptune musicians -- nerds who use Ataris, Game Boys, NESes and so on to make banging bytes of bleepy-bloopy music. They share a love of games and music, and use that love to share music made from game systems.
