Shuffled #31: Boston8Bit Interview PAX East 2012

Every other Wednesday either Matt or Alex C-Y share their love of music in an assortment of ways. Shuffled is a podcast whose format is as varied as their tastes in music, so hopefully you won't ever be bored and everyone can find something to enjoy.

One of my favorite spots at PAX East is the Jamspace. For the past three years, it has played host to some of my favorite acts such as Powerglove and Mega Ran. Expo goers of all walks can even come and jam on the open mic hours. What led me to this little nook in the first place though is the rocking chiptune collective known as Boston8Bit. This week I am pleased to have on the show one of the co-founders of the group along with several other chiptune artists from around the area and beyond. Read on to listen in and learn what Boston8Bit is all about.

Track list and additional information:

sadnes -- For Your Health (from Fill Your Head)

Carl Peczynski is the force behind Oxygenstar, Doomcloud, and a slew of other musical aliases. His music under the name sadnes is a blend of NES sounds and 90's inspired grunge. You can download the full EP, Fill Your Head, as a free download. A man of many styles, be sure to check out his other work which is a mix of just about everything and anything your eardrums can imagine.

Disasterpeace -- Adventure Live PAX East 2012 (from Fez)

Rich Vreeland, aka Disasterpeace, now resides on the west coast, but long ago he used to frequent Boston8Bit shows around the northeast. His latest endeavor, the soundtrack to the game Fez, comes out April 20th, but you can preorder it now or download the original track Adventure for free.

Br1ght Pr1mate -- Reach (from The Reality Chipmusic Love Industry)

James Primate is one half Bright Primate and co-founder of Boston8Bit. Alongside Lydia Primate, this duo put out some great tunes both for their own albums and soundtracks to videogames. Utilizing LSDJ and vocals, they offer some very upbeat tunes, but they also serve some very down tempo jams in the soundtrack to the iOS game Tangled, which is well worth checking out.

XC3N -- DR011 (from LSDJ)

When he isn't interview bombing with his amazing charm, Francis Rodrig hails from Canada and preforms under the name XC3N. He also is a part of the Toy Company, a Montreal group with similar aims to that of Boston8Bit. Francis has tons of toys at his fingertips, from PSPs to Gameboys, making heavy to soft electric beats.

MisfitChris -- Tropico Mud Cat (from The Howling)

Need something to get the heart pumping and the feet moving? Look no further than MisfitChris's mash of house music and chiptunes. The amount of energy he brings to his shows are off the charts and I find it impossible to stand still while listening. If you plan on going to Blip Festival NYC this coming May, be sure to check out his live set.

The sick drummer who was mentioned in the interview is and plays alongside Disasterpeace is Rekcahdam. He also makes dope music.

All two days worth of chiptune music can be seen on Youtube in one handy playlist.

A few of the artists mentioned here also made some great tracks on the Overclock Remix Legend of Zelda album 25YearLegend.
