Unoriginal Soundtracks: Mass Effect 2 Edition

Every other Wednesday I share a playlist of songs tangentially related to a single game or series. Songs about alien sex for Mass Effect, songs about world leaders for Civilization, and so on. Searching for random terms on Spotify is a great way to discover new music and rediscover old classics.

Mass Effect 2 would be this generation's Star Wars. If games were art, that is. Regardless, the characters join you on a suicide mission to explore the galaxy, loyalty, love, and sometimes levity. But, of course, games can't do that.

#1 - Built by Snow - Giant Robot Attack
Built by Snow describe themselves as "an Atari blasting out of a bazooka." But their Myspace lists one of their influences as "8 bit Nintendo" so I don't know what to think. I know I like bleeps and bloops though, and these guys mix chiptunes and pop tunes in a way that makes me smile.

#2 - Dirty Beatniks - Suicide Mission
In Europe, we have this music called "house." Artists create electronic sounds for Europeans to listen to while taking recreational drugs. Dirty Beatniks have been at this as long as Daft Punk, but with less catchy hooks and more dirt.

#3 - A.i. - Alien Sex
A.i. sound as futuristic as you'd expect for a band that sings about robots and aliens. Their history is an incestuous tapestry of folk, blues, and hard rock that breeds Tin Pan Alley songwriters with metal guitarists. Look out for them around Los Angeles, where they defy audiences to dance.

#4 - The Breakers - Suicide Mission
There are several bands that go by this name: a Danish pop rock band, more than one surf band, and this one. My only clue as to the true originator of this song was the album's page on CD Baby. This led to one of the many Breakers' band websites. This Breakers, it seems, was an LA garage band that split up in 1983. Their only legacy: a horrible Flash website and the album Way and Way Past.

#5 - Gilbert and Sullivan - Modern Major General
Even in 1879, Gilbert and Sullivan were struggling with piracy. Being British, their work wasn't protected by American copyright law. After numerous pirated productions of their previous opera, they rushed to the USA to be the first to capitalize on Pirates of Penzance. Meanwhile (to be the first in the world to perform it), their British production company rushed a matinee show with scripts in hands and improvised costumes.

#6 - Monty Python - Galaxy Song
Nihilism can be cheery, as proved by the masters of juxtaposition, Monty Python. Eric Idle, seen here as a galactic Willy Wonka, has stayed musical since writing many of Python's songs. He's currently touring with Spamalot -- a Python musical.

I don't know if it's bad form to say this, but I think the "actual" Mass Effect 2 soundtrack is pretty excellent as well. Might be worth checking out on its own.

@Jon - True. I don't think Alex does these as a means to replace the actual soundtracks while he plays, they are just a fun way to discover new music tangentially related to games he enjoys.
