Video Round-Up: SXSW Happened Again Edition

Video Round-Up is a weekly post collecting an assortment of videos from around the web. Whether they be music videos, creative viral marketing, just plain cool, or just plain ridiculous, they will all be found on Video Round-Up.

South by Southwest 2011 was a success, like it is every year. All I had to see was James Blake and I was happy. But there's a catalog filmed performances, small and large, that you can find at http://www.npr.org/series/sxsw. We'll show you some notable performances from this years show in addition to videos from bands whose presence in Austin, TX, over the weekend is totally unknown to us.

Ratatat's video for "Cherry" fools my eyes with its fast-and-slow animations. Its evolution is so gradual that I sometimes don't notice it happening. What's most important, though, is the wonderful song that fully blooms around the two-thirds mark.

Was Becoming Real at SXSW? If they were, and I, too, were, I would've danced heartily to this track. Don't stop the playback too quickly or you will miss how full the song becomes. (via Pitchfork)

Before the less energetic (but awesome) coming up, here is what I think the "classic" South by Southwest sound is. Grouplove: twangy guitars, shaky-screamy vocals, and rocking.

Let's bookend this post with another ethereal electronic artist. Julianna Barwick's "Tiny SXSW Concert," filmed by NPR, was a great success for me. I learn a lot from electronic musicians with very small setups--how they create such big sounds, and how their equipment differs from other artists. Plus, her hyper-reverbed vocal loops are gorgeous.

Did Michael Bay direct that Grouplove video? So many quick cuts I didn't know what was going on!
