Insufficient Funds: Childish Gambino EP

Insufficient Funds is a weekly post in which we feature a free, or very close to it, piece of media that you can enjoy without over drafting your bank account. So if you're low on funds, stay tuned to Cerebral Pop every Friday morning.

It seems the biggest enemy to Donald Glover's music career is the perception that the entire thing is some sort of joke. Whether it's the fact that everything else he's done is comedic (writing for 30 Rock, starring on Community, or performing with Derek Comedy), or the fact that everything he has released has been free, people just can't seem to take him seriously.

Maybe the release of this new self/titled EP, proving the whole music thing wasn't just a one-off experiment, will silence some of those voices. Though, even his music has never been completely serious. Just like with his full length the EP has some pretty amusing lyrics, they're never played as silly though.

Glover has a special way of crafting great songs that would easily fit alongside all other serious attempts at the rap genre, but with an air of silliness throughout. Like when he ends a line with "Swag" in a sort of mocking way, or accompanies the rising energy of a song by yelling, "Weeeee druuuuuuuuuuuunk" in the background multiple times. Everything he has done so far in his music career seems to simultaneously say, "I'm serious about this" and "A lot of rap is kind of silly so I'm not afraid to act silly and taunt it a bit", and this EP is no exception.

It's a refreshing blend, because most of the rap I've experienced is either deathly serious or completely goofy. Give Childish Gambino a listen and decide for yourself if you like the mix. After all, it's completely free right here. You can also just listen to it below if clicking that link is just too much.

I really enjoy Donald Glover's music, it comes from such a personal place. Few guys in his place would risk the nice job at a major network, chasing their dream to be come a rapper.
