Insufficient Funds: Codename Gordon

Insufficient Funds is a weekly post in which we feature a free, or very close to it, piece of media that you can enjoy without overdrafting your bank account. So if you're low on funds, stay tuned to Cerebral Pop every Friday morning.

Since I've gotten a laptop and Steam, I've begun collecting games like some sort of hoarder. As cheaply as possible, or even for free if I find someone with extra copies or codes they don't need. Or, of course, there is the generosity of Valve, with free releases like Portal and Alien Swarm. But there is a third free Valve-related game out there that you might not know about.

Also known as Half-Life 2D, Codename: Gordon is a retro-inspired tribute to the Half-Life games. It isn't exactly amazing, but it kept me entertained for an hour or two. The main problem is that when I turned it off five levels in it just kicked me back to the main menu with nothing saved. Sure, that was standard for games back on the NES, but the least they could have done was thrown in a save option so we wouldn't have to play through it all at once.

Codename: Gordon was a fan-made project that was sort of a promotional tool for Half-Life 2. However, when the publisher, Nuclear Vision, went bankrupt, it was pulled from Steam. At least superficially. It is still there, you just have to know how to get at it. If you have Steam installed on your computer, click here and it should let you install it for free, or type this into your web browser: steam://install/92.

Huh. Well spotted. I'm downloading that now.

I remember getting this game before Half-Life 2 was released. It basically served as table scraps after HL2 was delayed for a year. It's an entertaining romp and kind of reminds me a Metal Slug in some ways.
