Video Round-Up: TGS 2010 Edition

Video Round-Up is a weekly post collecting an assortment of videos from around the web. Whether they be music videos, creative viral marketing, just plain cool, or just plain ridiculous, they will all be found on Video Round-Up.

This year's Tokyo Game Show provided gamers with plenty to ogle and slaver about, some shocking announcements, and some news that downright offended audiences. Here are my picks for the most noteworthy trailers of the exhibition. They aren't necessarily the best--just the ones you need to see.

Look at this trailer. Notice its similarities to American franchises. Hear the grunts of anger.

Part of me likes this trailer. I like that games are going bigger--almost stupid big. Japanese game developers are maintaining some of their idiosyncrasies while adapting (I hope) Western techniques. And part of me sees the end of this trailer, and it's funny. Why is this gentleman so damn salty?

When Marvel vs. Capcom 2 released on PSN and XBLA, history was, in a very small way, made. This game has had incredible staying power, outlasting other mash-up fighters for years. But physical copies for home consoles were always rare. Now, soon after MvC2 became digital and therefore prevalent, MvC3 is on the horizon. It remains 2D, but with 3D models, like Street Fighter IV and most other modern fighting games. Let's hope the game mechanics stay the same to satisfy MvC2 fans, and change to satisfy new players.

The first three of four trailers in the round-up show off Japanese games? Indeed! This FFXIV trailer is done well in my opinion, besides the British accents. I get the trope that high fantasy requires characters of British origin, but I hoped for some Australian and American in there as well. At any rate, the trailer may conjure more hype for XIV than is healthy, because I hear the beta testers saying that the game is hardly different from its predecessor, Final Fantasy XI.

And now, the trailer you must see--the trailer that spawned backlash all over the internet. Dante's look has changed in a big way, supposedly adapting to what is "in" these days. I must admit that, while I do not support all the anger from DMC fans about this change, I also don't like the new Dante very much. I prefer the cheesy, are-you-kidding-me-he's-way-too-over-the-top previous Dante.
