Music Review: Fake Problems - Real Ghosts Caught on Tape

When I first heard of Fake Problems, the comparisons to Against Me were inevitable. They had a similar, folksy/punk sound, and just happened to also come from Florida. It might have been a shallow attempt at describing them, but it was a fairly accurate way of doing so. Still, I knew right from the start that they had promise and would become something great in a couple of albums. As far as I am concerned, this album is it.

A lot of music "fans" are always ready to jump down a band's throat when they release something that isn't on the exact same lines as previous albums they really loved, and I am not one of those people. I appreciate when a band grows, matures, and evolves musically. While I'll admit that Real Ghosts Caught on Tape is much more poppy than their past releases, the song writing is what draws me in.

Everything feels tighter and more thought-out, with a good mix of songs. There's no set formula, and each song easily stands on it's own. After a couple listens you'll get a feel for the songs and some of the lyrics, and be unable to resist singing and grooving along. I've no doubt made a fool of myself multiple times while driving and listening to this CD.

If you aren't a prude about enjoying music that is a bit poppy, than there is no reason you won't enjoy Real Ghosts. It's especially recommended for fans of Against Me's recent releases, and if you like it, you should also check out Cobra Skulls.
