Music Review: The Accident Will - The Other Side of Forever

Canadian rockers, The Accident Will, serve up a steady hard rock beat (and at times a little punk too), with their debut EP The Other Side of Forever. While this trio plays most of their music inside the familiar sound scape of bands like Queens of the Stone Age and The Offspring, they do manage to add a few hooks that keep this album engaging.

The Other Side of Forever wears a heavy garage rock sound throughout. The mix is handled quite well, but the lead vocal performance could be improved with more care. Most of whats sung sounds rather flat in parts, with the low growls and screams doing a better service for the lead singer's vocal talent and range. The use of guitar effects I found the most surprising, offering up a nice slightly distorted edge to several songs, especially when used throughout the closing track, “The Rowan Child.”

The first song, “It's a Trap!,” opens the EP with a fast and furious pace and ends with some more strange but fitting guitar effects. I also really liked the third track “In the Blackest Night (The Hunter)” which stands out not for being overly complex, but having simple and effective structure (though the ending “huff, huff” sound seemed a bit weird and out of place).

For a debut EP from this Alberta group, they manage to give a solid performance. While the vocals rubbed me the wrong way during some parts, they definitely started with a solid release. The heavy rock sound and strange effects used would be at odds with many bands aimed at similar scope, but they manage to pull off a couple of good tracks. With more practice and polish, The Accident Will have the makings to go further. The Other Side of Forever can be found online at their bandcamp page, and for the time being it is pay as you see fit. This EP is certainly worth a listen.
