Trailer Park: March 12th

Trailer Park is a weekly post, every thursday, where we feature trailers for the upcoming weekend movie releases.

Doing this post every week has made the Hollywood formula glaringly obvious to me. Not that I wasn't already aware, but posting it each week is sort of like shoving your nose into it. Do the studios actually sit down and talk about this kind of thing?

"Alright, when are we going to release She's Out of My League? March 5th?"

"No! They already have a romantic comedy that week."

"Hmm, how about March 12th?"

"Let's see. Green Zone is the action flick. Remember Me is the drama. Nope! No romcom. We've got our date."

Green Zone

With young action stars at an all-time low, Matt Damon has stepped up to fill the gap. I only saw the first Bourne movie, but it was worth the ticket price. I'd definitely be willing to guess that Green Zone is as well since it's by the same director.

She's Out of my League

I don't really have anything insightful to write here. Not that I ever do.

The summer blockbuster season slowly approaches. Until the onslaught of big budgets and terrible scripts finally makes landfall, we've got these few tiny storms. I'm crossing my fingers that they are entertaining. Though, most of them are aimed toward kids. I really wish my kid was older so that I could go to movies with her and not look like the socially-stunted adult I really am. It felt weird to go see TMNT in the theater, BUT IT WAS THE NINJA TURTLES!

Alice in Wonderland

There was a time when I was excited for a Tim Burton movie no matter what it was. Now though, I've grown tired of the Burton remakes. It's rumored he's going to be redoing Sleeping Beauty next. STOP! Make another original movie! I enjoyed Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Sweeney Todd, and I will probably enjoy Alice in Wonderland, but I would love to see him do something new again.

Brooklyn's Finest

A solidly acted albeit cliche cop flick? Sure, that'd probably be an acceptable weekend time killer.

Trailer Park is a weekly post, every thursday, where we feature trailers for the upcoming weekend movie releases.

Two pretty big releases this week. Thriller fans rejoice, as each film is of the drama/mystery genre. Both look rather good with two very different plots. If you're heading to the cinema this weekend you should definitely check out one of these two.

First up is Shutter Island, the latest effort from acclaimed director Martin Scorsese. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo and Ben Kingsley. Two U.S. Marshals are sent to a mental institution for the criminally insane to investigate the escape of a murderous psychopath. The film appears to become much more of a psychological thriller than a straight forward cop story. It is definitely one to look out for.

Next up is The Ghost Writer. Directed by the controversial Roman Polanski and starring Pierce Brosnan, Ewan Mcgregor and Kim Cattrall. A ghost writer is given the task of writing a former British Prime Minister's biography. During his work he uncovers a conspiracy that endangers his life. It certainly seems to be a tense, edge of your seat ride.

Another week with something or everyone. You've got your monster movie for guys, your chick flick for dates, and your preteen fantasy flick for, well, preteens. Then there's the indie drama for those who feel above the rest. Don't have any plans for the weekend? You might as well get out to the theaters. You'll probably get your money's worth.

I keep going back and forth on this movie. The original trailer looked unbelievably cheesy, but this one is pretty good. But then, that picture up there is pretty cheesy. Either way, it's probably worth a night at the movies, even if it ends up being pretty cheesetastic.

Oh, you kids and your Harry Potter-esque books. I thought Hollywood was going to stop this mindless greenlighting of preteen fantasy books after Golden Compass failed to catch on. Considering I've never once heard of this series of books, I'm thinking they didn't stop mindlessly greenlighting, though I hadn't heard of Twilight when that first movie was announced, so I probably just don't know what I'm talking about.

Trailer Park is a weekly post, every thursday, where we feature trailers for the upcoming weekend movie releases.

You've got your won't-remember-it-in-a-year's-time action flick, and your Notebook-esque chick flick. This week seems like the most cookie cutter movie release schedule ever, but never fear. I am here to stear you in the right direction. But first, we must wade through the muck. The thick, dirty, John Travolta-laden muck. Get your galoshes on, you don't want any Travolta in between your toes.

From Paris with Love

I kind of respect John Travolta. When his career was tanking before, it took Tarantino to save him. Now, he could easily go the Eddie Murphy route and keep doing Wild Dogs and Old Hogs, etcetera etcetera, or he can do things like this. I'd much rather watch bald angry Travolta, then I would family friendly comedy Travolta.

Dear John

Countless Iraq War movies have come out, and countless have failed. Now we're seeing filmmakers wise up. I don't even know if the guy in this movie is deployed in Iraq, or some fictional war, but by concentrating on the romance part of the story it will draw in a completely different type of audience. Maybe once they are there, they'll get a little bit of those war movies that Hollywood really wanted to get out there several years ago.

District 13: Ultimatum

If at all possible, this is where you should be spending your money this weekend. Back in 2004, District B13 helped bring parkour into the mainstream. Starring the creator of the, I guess we'll call it a sport, the movie showed off stunts that were done with no wires or CG effects. Now all involved parties are back for a sequel. Yes, it has a limited release, but you are guaranteed to see much better action in this movie than you will in that Travolta one up there. Seek it out and hopefully it will expand in the coming weeks.

Trailer Park: January 29

Trailer Park is a weekly post, every thursday, where we feature trailers for the upcoming weekend movie releases.

Not much is out this week, but there are two films of note.

First up is Edge of Darkness. Starring Mel Gibson and Ray Winstone, it tells the tale of a hard-as-nails homicide detective who is investigating the death of his daughter. This being a movie, he of course uncovers a government plot and an agent is sent in to clean up the evidence. Expect plenty of twists in the plot, as it's written by William Monahan, the Oscar winning screenwriter of The Departed.

The other movie of note is When in Rome, starring Kristen Bell and Josh Duhamel. Bell is the young woman who is unlucky in love. She impulsively takes a handful of coins from a "fountain of love" in Rome, and then finds herself besieged by wannabe lovers who had previously thrown their coins into the fountain. Seems to be a fairly competent rom-com, one worthy of bringing a lady to.

Trailer Park: January 22nd

Welcome to Trailer Park, a weekly round-up of the latest movie releases.

One of this weeks biggest releases is Legion. The first film by directer Scott Stewart, and featuring Dennis Quaid and Paul Bettany. With Humanity's last hope, in unborn baby form, being protected by Archangel Micheal, expect some exhilarating angel on angel fight scenes. It doesn't look too shabby and only adds to the already awesome movie line-up for 2010.

This weeks other big release is Extraordinary Measures. Based on a true story and boasting a relatively all star cast of Brendan Fraser, Harrison Ford and Keri Russell. The plot centers on two parents journey to find a researcher who might be able to cure their two children's rare genetic disorder. Expect some heart wrenching moments and maybe some tears.

Well here we are folks. It's time to see whether or not James Cameron's ridiculously huge budget will pay off. If this thing bombs, then it will be the biggest waste of money ever created. I'm sure it'll make back it's almost half a billion, after marketing, budget at some point though -- even if it takes 20 years. But it probably won't bomb. It's just a matter of the mainstream movie-going audience's interest. The nerds can't carry half a billion.

I stopped watching this trailer about halfway through. It quickly became clear that it was going to explain the plot of the entire movie. That sort of shows the problem that has plagued the entire marketing campaign for Avatar -- they have no clue how to market it. That's a really bad problem to have when your movie's budget will likely hit the half billion mark when all is said and done.

So they went all out. Avatar day was an unprecedented marketing move. The idea was to get people into 3D theaters so they could see for themselves what all the buzz was about. They would get excited once they saw it in full blown 3D. Great, then don't release the trailer the morning before they are supposed to go see it the "real" way. I showed up for Avatar day, which I wrote about here, but more then half of my showing didn't.

Who knows how this whole thing will play out? James Cameron has to be crossing his fingers pretty hard right now though.

Meh. Not a musical guy. Still, Daniel Day Lewis and lots of half naked women might be alright.

Trailer Park: December 11th

Trailer Park is a weekly post, every thursday, where we feature trailers for the upcoming weekend movie releases.

Most likely the biggest release this week is Disney's The Princess and the Frog. But since I covered that in it's limited release last week, I'll open with Clint Eastwood's latest instead. Still, if there was any chance that some of this weeks limited releases would come around me, then there is one movie I would be going to see.

Something about Nelson Mandela and soccer? I'm not really sure. I haven't paid attention to the commercials and our sound isn't working right now, so I'll talk about Gran Torino. It was alright I suppose. Terrible acting though. At least Invictus has talented actors. Matt Damon beats Clint Eastwood and a bunch of newbies any day.

This is the first time I've watched this trailer, and now I really want to see this movie. The visuals look great. Is this going to go wide on the same week Avatar comes out? Will that be a threat? I don't think anyone expects Avatar to make back its budget anytime soon, but it could be enough to make Lovely Bones fall by the wayside. Disappointing.

This week looks pretty dull. Soon we'll be in the Christmas movie blitz though. For now, we've got another Oscar hopeful coming out in very limited release so that it will qualify. Thats something, right?

I would easily say that this might be a good popcorn action flick full of fun and explosions, but Hollywood has been dissappointing on those lately. I heard even Ninja Assassin sucked! How can you screw up a movie named Ninja Assassin?!

While it is a fascinating trailer, this doesn't really tell me much about the plot of the movie. Still, I've enjoyed Jason Reitman's other movies -- Thank You for Smoking, and Juno.

Trailer Park: Thanksgiving Weekend

Trailer Park is a weekly post, every thursday, where we feature trailers for the upcoming weekend movie releases.

My wife thinks that it's a very weird thing to do, but my family always went out to see a movie Thanksgiving night. We definitely weren't the only ones. Despite my wife's misunderstanding of this tradition, it's pretty commonplace. How else can you explain the existence of the Robin Williams/John Travolta vessel, Old Dogs? You can't. But if nothing else piques your interest on this week's release list, then perhaps you should check out The Fantastic Mr. Fox, which is finally going wide.

The Road

It's uncommon that a book I've actually read is adapted in movie form, as I'm not one of these Lit Losers, which is a phrase I just invented -- so this presents me the rare opportunity to act pithy and stuck-up about all the things that the movie got wrong. For instance, casting Charlize Theron in an attempt at having another big name on the poster is negligable as... well, nevermind. I'll just say, that the best part of this trailer, is the Wilhelm Scream they used at 2:10 or so. Really? We're still using that? Alright.

Ninja Assassin

Remember, I think it was late last year, that video game Ninja Blade came out? Everyone was commenting about how it was unfathomable that a game hadn't been named that yet. That's how I feel about this movie. This hasn't been done before? But I'm not saying that in a negative way, because if it hasn't then it was necessary. I applaud the people behind finally bringing this to theaters. Bravo guys, bravo.

Trailer Park for November 20th

Trailer Park is a weekly post, every thursday, where we feature trailers for the upcoming weekend movie releases.

I probably should have put a picture of New Moon up there, as I usually post a picture of the biggest movie of the week, and then have that trailer featured first, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it. I even went so far as search 'New Moon' on Google Images, but what I was greeted with made me question even doing this Trailer Park in the first place. So I'm just going to ignore that movie. Except for all that stuff I just said about it. And I guess I'll probably put a link to the trailer in the Other Releases section. But besides that, consider it ignored!

Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans

I don't think I've even seen a Werner Herzog movie, but I've learned one thing in my movie watching experience. The quality of a movie is always directly proportional to the quality of the director. Herzog has plenty of buzz behind him, so I'm curious about this movie, it's as simple as that. Besides, pretty much nothing else worthwhile is coming out this week.

Trailer Park for November 13th

Trailer Park is a weekly post, every thursday, where we feature trailers for the upcoming weekend movie releases.

It's time to gear up for the holiday movie season. What better way to kick that off then with a Roland Emmerich disaster movie of epic proportions. Perhaps even more epic-like proportions then the epic proportions seen in his previous disaster movies of epic proportions. Be prepared, for an epic holiday movie season... or something.

Yep. How do you top your last epic disaster movie? You take out The White House with an aircraft carrier. And, you know... that whole end of the world thing.

Something about the rebel group sticking it to the man, seems clichè. Still, this seems like it'll be entertaining for a trip to the movies. At the very least it'd be a good movie for teenagers and their parents to bond over. Soemthing that I'm sure all teenagers want to do.

The blogosphere is abuzz. Wes Anderson's stop motion adaptation of the Roald Dahl book The Fantastic Mr. Fox, has sparked up quite a bit of conversation. Besides all that nonsense about him directing large portions of it via email (do you really expect him to stand there watching them move things a centimeter at a time?), there's the main fact that he is sticking to a very old style of stop motion. Will this pay off? Probably not. Will it be cool to watch? Definitely.

Trailer Park for November 6th

Trailer Park is a weekly post, every thursday, where we feature trailers for the upcoming weekend movie releases.

There are a couple movies that look like they might be good this week, though, both are questionable. At least there's more options out there then just the Michael Jackson movie.

The Box

I liked Donnie Darko quite a bit, even after all of the backlash. I don't know if it was a result of the backlash that made almost everyone and their mother bash on Richard Kelly's next flick, as I didn't see it, but The Box looks like it could be interesting. The problem is, I only think it might be good because of Richard Kelly. The premise seems kind of lame, but who knows. Early talk claimed that the plot goes in a completely different direction, so I guess I can't really be sure until I've seen it.

A Christmas Carol

Meh. Seems like average kid movie stuff.

The Men Who Stare at Goats

This looks like a Coen Brothers movie, which is a good thing. Dark humor is hard to pull off though. The trailer looks great though. I'll probably see this when it comes around my area.

Trailer Park: October 30th

The title of this Michael Jackson movie is very relevant, it just so happens to be the only thing releasing this week. Well alright, technically it's the only thing releasing wide this week, but there are other limited releases. Some of them look like they might be pretty good too.

Michael Jackson's This Is It

I'm pretty sure this is going to crush everything else at the box office this week. That's probably why nobody else is releasing anything alongside it. I'm not sure how limited some of these other releases are, but my guess is VERY limited next week and then expanding in the weeks that This Is It is dropping off.

The Boondock Saints 2: All Saints Day

I really liked the first Boondock Saints, but looking back on it I wonder if I still would. I watched it when I was probably 16 or so, which would have been the perfect time for me to cling onto it. Still, this sequel will probably be a great action flick to see in the theaters. And when all summer blockbusters are long gone, this'll be the only one for awhile.

Gentlemen Broncos

I never saw Nacho Libre, but I loved Napoleon Dynamite. And yes, you all probably hate that movie now because you're cool and you lash back against the hype. But answer me this; isn't the backlash against Napoleon Dynamite almost the new trend? *GASP*! Now you need to lash back against the backlash! Quick! Go see Gentlemen Broncos and rave about how it changed your life and was the funniest movie you've ever seen! Just don't go too far or else you'll have to join the backlash against... you know what? I'm just going to end this now.

Hey uh, nobody... nobody noticed I didn't post one of these last week did they? Good, I didn't think anyone did. Besides, you all knew what movie to go see. At least you thought you did, Where The Wild Things Are got very mixed reviews. Our own Dan didn't know how to express his thoughts on it in writing. But anyway, this week is the gear up for Halloween, which means a new Saw movie. That's awesome, because it's been like 5 minutes since a new one of those.

Saw VI

Oh man! This movie is ripped straight from the headlines! You thought that puppet guy was just a sick murderer, but he has views and ideals. Healthcare decisions should be between the patient and their doctor. Damn right lunatic puppet guy! You should give speeches at political conventions or something.

Astro Boy

It's sort of like Inspector Gadget meets Mega Man then? I don't know, I never knew anything about Astro Boy. Mega Man is awesome though. They should make a Mega Man movie.

Wait... there's only one movie coming out in wide release this week? Really? Maybe if it actually looked good that would be a different story. I guess we aren't through the shit storm. Now I have to really pay attention to all the limited release trailers to see if there's anything good out there. I've never heard of any of these movies. Oh well, let's get this over with. I guess we'll start with the crappy wide release one first...

Couples Retreat

There was once a time that I would give a credit to any former cast member of Arrested Development. No matter how terrible the movie they were in looked, it'd get a pass because they were in it. That's over now as they have appeared in a lot of piles of shit, Jason Bateman especially. This looks to continue that tradition.

Adventures of Power

I'm not sure what to think of this. A premise as ridiculous as someone who dreams of being an air drummer, is a fine line to walk. It could be brilliantly hilarious, or completely stupid.

Bronson

I guess this is as good a trailer as any to feature. The rest don't look very good. This might be entertaining. That is if it's even coming anywhere near you. I guess it got released in Europe in March?

Is that it? Are we through the worst of it, or is this just the eye of the crap storm? I'm kind of afraid to come out of my shelter for fear I'll get stuck in another downpour of trash.

The Invention of Lying

I really like Ricky Gervais... at least, I think I do. I mean The Office was great right? And I loved the podcasts, but uh... what else has he done? He was in Night at the Museum! Oh... right. How about Ghost Town! Yeeeeeeah, that looked terrible. Well, at least this one is getting good reviews! That's at least a step in the right direction. Now maybe I'll have a chance to be disappointed by him IN the theater instead of just before release.

Whip It

Oh! I love DEVO! Is this movie about them? Oh... crap. Well, it does have Ellen Page in it. She's kind of cute. Although directed by Drew Barrymore is kind of a scary thing to see. She might just be a budding Spielberg though. Right? Maybe?

A Serious Man

This trailer makes my head hurt. It's pretty brilliant, but all I could imagine was a crushing skull and ripping skin and... ugh. I was unaware this movie was coming out so soon. I was all prepared to catch up on all the Coen Brothers classics before this came out as I'm very far behind, but I guess I'm too late.

Trailer Park: September 25th

Well, it's the last weekend of September. I'm not really sure what to think of the movie releases this week. We've got two sci-fi action flicks that look like they would have made summer release as blockbusters, but what does it say that they've been thrown in the September dumping ground? I guess we'll find out once the reviews hit.

Pandorum

Wow. Uh, that scene at the end of this trailer is just... wow. Maybe we won't have to wait for the reviews on this one.

Surrogates

Like I said, this looks like just another summer popcorn action flick, but it was thrown into September territory so I'd be wary of it's quality. Still, that scene where everyone collapsed at once? Somehow that looked really cool to me. Probably not worth seeing the whole movie just for that is it?

Capitalism: A Love Story

Michael Moore's jokes are kind of getting old. The megaphone outside of the building thing? Give it a rest. Still, I'm interested to hear the points he brings up in the film.

Well, it's a much better week for movies. Maybe not movies that I want to see, but there's at least several that SOME people will want to see. Whether you've got kids or you're a fan of schlocky horror movie campiness, there's stuff out there for you finally.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs

Seems funny and goofy enough to be worth a viewing. If my kid was a little older, I'd probably take her to see this.

Jennifer's Body

Somehow it seems a better fit for Diablo Cody's lines to be in a campy b-horror movie then it did a indie darling Oscar contender like Juno. And somehow, Megan Fox seems perfect to deliver her cute, quirky, kind of ditzy dialogue. Still, will this be just like Drag Me To Hell, and bring in an audience that it completely unaware of it's purposeful cheesiness?

The Informant

Steven Soderburgh is one of those directors I've been meaning to catch up on. Problem is, he's so stinking prolific. He's already had Che, The Girlfriend Experience, and now this within the span of one year. The Informant is a true story, that was told in detail on an episode of the This American Life radio show. I think I've heard that episode, but this trailer doesn't hint at anything from it, so maybe I haven't.
